The report, Responsible Innovation in AI x Life Sciences (人工智能 x 生命科学的负责任创新), is a collaborative publication by Concordia AI and the Center for Biosafety Research and Strategy of Tianjin University. The report explores the convergence of artificial intelligence and the life sciences, emphasizing this intersection’s potential for transformative advances alongside critical biosafety and biosecurity challenges. The analysis focuses on key developments and risks associated with foundation models, advanced biological design tools, and automated scientific platforms.
The 70-page report draws on more than 300 sources to explore major trends in the convergence of AI and life sciences, highlight transformative benefits, identify and evaluate potential risks, and review existing biosecurity governance practices. Finally, the report proposes risk mitigation measures and governance options, offering tailored recommendations for diverse stakeholders.
The report serves five key groups: governments (to enhance oversight and national biosecurity); AI research and development organizations (to integrate safety practices and responsible approaches); life sciences institutions (to apply biodesign tools prudently); safety and governance researchers (to shape policies and ethical standards); and international organizations (to foster global consensus and cross-border cooperation).
This publication is not a definitive governance framework but rather an initial step toward promoting responsible innovation at the convergence of AI and life sciences. It aims to spark constructive dialogue among experts in AI, life sciences, biosafety, and biosecurity, and we invite feedback and collaboration to further refine its insights.
