China AI Governance Researcher

Location

Based in either our Beijing or Singapore office for at least 75% of the year, with up to 25% remote work flexibility.

Application Process

Our hiring process has 4 phases:
Written application form (20-30 minutes).
Online written test (1 hour).
2 online interviews (2 hours).
2 day in-person work trial (including reference checks).

Background

Understanding China’s position on AI risks is critical for international coordination and central to Concordia AI’s mission. Concordia AI publishes comprehensive research on China’s AI safety ecosystem, including the State of AI Safety in China reports (2025, 2024, 2023) and the AI Safety in China newsletter. We also develop policy recommendations for major international initiatives, including the UN AI Advisory Body Interim Report and Global AI Safety Summits. The China AI Governance Researcher will collaborate closely with our Frontier AI Governance Researcher on these policy outputs.

In this role, you will analyze and interpret China’s AI safety and governance developments for English-speaking audiences while developing policy recommendations to strengthen international coordination. This offers opportunities to become a leading authority on China’s AI safety landscape, deepen understanding of the Chinese AI ecosystem, and publish original research for Concordia AI’s global network of readers.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to, and depending on seniority, lead original English-language research and writing on China’s AI safety, governance, and broader ecosystem.
  • Support publication of future State of AI Safety in China reports and the AI Safety in China newsletter.
  • Develop concrete policy recommendations for international policy initiatives and major global summits

Qualifications

Required

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as international relations, public policy, China studies, or AI/technology governance and at least 1-2 years of relevant working experience; or a graduate degree in a relevant field.
  • Professional Mandarin reading and listening skills (HSK 5+ or equivalent).
  • Experience writing and delivering oral English-language presentations of policy issues.

Preferred

  • Experience writing on Chinese AI policy and/or industry.
  • Ability to build strong networks with AI policy communities around the world.
